Sportswear store owner and former sports agent Matt Schoemaker has his hands full as he’s sorting out the men’s shoes market right now.
The sports shoe company he co-founded with his brother, Matt, is now the largest in the country and has a huge presence in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal.
“I’m doing it for the kids,” he said, with the help of a hand-drawn chart on his laptop.
“When they get out, I’m going to show them how I’m doing.”
The Schoemers were inspired to launch their first-ever store after witnessing the success of the local Nike brand.
Their father, a former NHL player, wanted to own his own store so he could get back into the game.
He and his brother were given the chance when the company was purchased by a local entrepreneur in 2009.
The Schomers started in a garage, and since then have expanded to an 11,000-square-foot space in the heart of the city.
Their biggest focus now is to help people find the best brands for their needs.
“We’re trying to make sure we’ve got a good selection for the most important brands,” Matt said.
“The kids, especially the younger ones, want the best.”
The store has a variety of sports shoes and accessories.
The top-selling sneakers in Canada are Nike Air Max 1, Air Max 3, Air Force 1, Jordan 3, Jordans and Air Max Xs.
(CBC) Schoeman has had success with the top brands in the past, such as the Nike Air Jordan 1 and Air Jordan 3.
“It’s a very good product,” he noted.
“But it has to have the right fit.
You have to get your feet in and out of it.”
Matt and his wife, Lillie, have also had success in the men, with an assortment of Air Maxs and Air Force Ones.
The couple has also made the move to the womens department.
The best-seller in the women department is the Nike Zoom 1, which was released in 2011.
It is the only sneaker that Matt and Lillia have both owned.
They also own the Air Jordan 2, Air Jordan 4 and Air Presto 5, which were released in 2013.
The pair is the pair that has been the mainstay of the family since it was introduced in the mid-2000s.
“There are some great options out there for women,” Matt explained.
“Some people like Nike’s.
We’ve been fans of Nike for a long time.
It’s not the only company we own.”
The shoe company’s popularity in the US has also helped the Schoems make the jump from being an established family business to a global brand.
“Our kids started out as just a casual store,” Matt admitted.
“Now we’re part of a global operation, we’re a major player in the market.”
They’re also the first Canadian family to be in the business since the early 1990s.
Matt said he and Lellie started selling the shoes at their parents’ home.
“They were just kids, but we just loved making shoes,” he explained.
The store is located at 1350 Queen St. E., in the Downtown Eastside, at the corner of Queen St., between Gerrard St. and Wellington St. The main entry is on Gerrard St., but there are also three stores in the area.
Matt and Matt Schow, co-founder of Sportswears.ca, are in the process of opening a second location on Queen St between Wellington and Gerrard Sts.
The second store is planned to open in 2018.
“This is the way we want to operate, but this is the beginning of the business,” Matt added.
“So this is a big start for us.”
